BASIC 4 MATHEMATICS QUESTION 9

STRAND 1: NUMBER
SUB-STRAND 1: Counting, Representation and Cardinality
CONTENT STANDARD 1: Demonstrate an understanding of quantities and place value for multi-digit whole numerals up to 100 000.
INDICATORS AND EXEMPLARS 2: Read and write numbers in figures and in words up 100,000

EXAMPLE 2

Ask learners to write given numbers on the expanded form of the number:

14031=10,000 + 4,000 +30 + 1

TIP/CLUE: To write the expanded form of numbers from ones to Hundred thousands, simply write the first value or number and change the remaining numbers to zero, do same to the rest of the numbers till you reach the ones place where you leave the value as it is.

Example 1:

Expand the number from the chart below

754 323 = 700 000 + 50 000 + 4 000 + 300 + 20 + 3

Example 2:

350 421 = 300 000 + 50 000 + 400 + 20 + 1

From the second example, the value of thousands place was zero, so in this case you skip it when expanding.

Now expand the following numbers

1. 764 531 =

2. 451 012 =

3. 231 750 =

4. 198 165 =

5. 437 867 =

6. 967 227 =

7. 703 407 =

8. 272 010 =

9. 165 016 =

10. 70 008 =

1. 764 531 = 700 000 + 60 000 + 4 000 + 500 + 30 + 1

2. 451 012 = 400 000 + 50 000 + 1 000 + 10 + 2

3. 231 750 = 200 000 + 30 000 + 1 000 + 700 + 50

4. 198 165 = 100 000 + 90 000 + 8 000 + 100 + 60 + 5

5. 437 867 = 400 000 + 30 000 + 7 000 + 800 + 60 + 7

6. 967 227 = 900 000 + 60 000 + 7 000 + 200 + 20 + 7

7. 703 407 = 700 000 + 3 000 + 400 + 7

8. 272 010 = 200 000 + 70 000 + 2 000 + 10

9. 165 016 = 100 000 + 60 000 + 5 000 + 10 + 6

10. 70 008 = 70 000 + 8
