TIPS
Computers are classified according to their physical size, speed, storage capacity, cost and the number of users who can access the computer at a given time.
Ordinary desktop and laptop computers cannot handle tasks that involve very large volume of data and processing. There are special computers that are designed for such purpose which include Super computers, mainframe computers and minicomputers.

NOTE THE FOLLOWING;

*There are currently five generation of computers.

A. 1st Generation {Period ; 1940 - 1956, Other content: 1940s - 1950s}, Evolving Hardware: Vacuum Tubes
*Examples; 1. ENIAC Computer (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer, built by J. Presper Eckert and John V. Mauchly was a general-purpose computer. It had been cumbersome, and large, and contained 18,000 vacuum tubes)
2. EDVAC: Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer was designed by von Neumann. It could store data also as instruction and thus the speed was enhanced.
3. UNIVAC: Universal Automatic Computer was developed in 1952 by Eckert and Mauchly.

B. 2nd Generation {Period ; 1956 - 1963, Other content: 1950s - 1960s}, Evolving Hardware: Transistor Based
*Examples ;
1. PDP-8 {Programmed Data Processor},
2. IBM1400 series {International Business Machine},
3. IBM 7090 and 7094,
4. UNIVAC 1107 {Universal Automatic Computer},
5. CDC 3600 {Control Data Corporation}, etc.

C. 3rd Generation {Period ; 1963 - 1971, Other content: 1960s - 1970s}, Evolving Hardware: Integrated Circuit Based
*Examples ;
1. IBM 360,
2. IBM 370,
3. PDP-11,
4. NCR 395 {National Cash Register},
5. B6500 {BURroughs 6500},
6. UNIVAC 1108, etc.

D. 4th Generation {Period ; 1971 - 2010, Other content: 1971 - present}, Evolving Hardware: Microprocessor Based
*Examples;
1. IBM PC,
2. STAR 1000,
3. APPLE II,
4. Apple Macintosh,
5. Alter 8800, etc.
