STRAND 1: Diversity of Matter
SUB-STRAND 1: Living things and Non-living things
CONTENT STANDARD 1: Show understanding of the physical features and life processes of living things and use this understanding to classify them
INDICATOR 1: Classify plants based on root system

ANSWER THE QUESTIONS BELOW;

1. Briefly describe plants with tap roots system and give at least five examples of it.

2. Briefly describe plants with fibrous roots system and give at least five examples of it.

3. What is the similarities between plants with tap roots and plants with fibrous roots.

4. Tabulate three (3) differences between plants with tap roots and plants with fibrous roots.

1. Briefly describe plants with tap roots system and give at least five examples of it.

Plants with tap roots system have one main root called tap root pointing down into the soil with smaller roots growing around it.

The tap root system allows plants to anchor better in the soil because they grow deep into the soil. This makes it very difficult to uproot them.

They are also able to absorb water and nutrients from deep down the soil.

Some examples of plants with tap roots are mango plant, okra plant, carrot plant, orange plant, pawpaw plant and pepper plant.

2. Briefly describe plants with fibrous roots system and give at least five examples of it.

Plants with fibrous roots have many small or tiny roots without a main root. Fibrous roots branch off sideways throughout the soil.

In a fibrous root system, the roots grow close to the surface of the ground. This allows plants with fibrous roots to absorb water and nutrients over a large surface area.

Also, plants with fibrous roots are easy to uproot unlike plants with tap roots.

Some examples of plants with fibrous roots are onion, maize, cocoyam, grass, plantain, coconut and tomato plants.

3. What is the similarities between plants with tap roots and plants with fibrous roots.

There is only one similarities between plants with tap root and plants with fibrous roots.

That is , both tap roots and fibrous roots have tiny roots around them.

4. Tabulate three (3) differences between plants with tap roots and plants with fibrous roots.
Tap roots Fibrous roots
Tap roots have one main big root with smaller roots growing from them Fibrous roots do not have a main root. All the roots are small and similar in size.
Tap roots grow deep into the soil. Fibrous roots grow just below the surface of the ground or sometimes above the ground.
Plants with tap roots are difficult to uproot. Fibrous roots are less difficult to uproot.
